Friendly, gentle, humorous, interested, clever (goes without saying), quirky - these are all words that come to mind when I think of dear Nick. Growing up in Ealing as a teenager, it was a pleasure to visit Ingrid and her family. Life there was never dull. The mix of Danish and Russian made for interesting discussions - wide ranging, challenging, never dull and always accompanied by a welcome tipple which had usually been acquired on a Waloff holiday abroad. Nick of course never not had a view but he delivered it a considered way that was never combative. Years later his wide ranging knowledge was put to the test when my daughter and I embarked on a memorable boat ride from Corfu Town to Butrint, an Ancient Greek and later Roman city in Albania that Nick suggested was worth visiting. Needless to say, it was an amazing adventure not only in seeing the archeological remains but also gaining an insight into modern day life there. Thank you so much Nick. Another memory is a group of us walking, many years ago now, up Park Lane from Hyde Park Corner on a hot June night when the annual MoonWalk for breast cancer was taking place. As we made our way to the Hilton hotel for dinner in the restaurant where a friend was singing, an army of women (and men) were marching down Park Lane in the opposite direction sporting luminous pink bras. Such a bizarre but great fun to behold. The lovely comments and photos on this site reminds me of his genuine love of life and wide-ranging interests so many of which are so relevant in the world today. I hope he is taking all this enthusiasm with him into the next.
