Nick had a another passion for all things old, namely Industrial Archaeology, which probably developed when he was studying and working in the North East, where much was in decline with the closing of the steel mills and the mines and the local pit villages near to Newcastle. I had a memorable week with Nick in about 1974 visiting the Marsden Grotto, Consett the former steel village and Beamish Industrial village and Hadrian's Wall. Little did I realise then that I would be able to revisit Beamish over 50 years later in June 2015, when my daughter was at the end of her second year at Durham. What changes Nick would have seen in the North East and particularly Beamish after so many years, an area of the country that I don't think that he re-visited.
