Dr Alan Baker, Emmanuel College, Cambridge 25th January 2021

I was stunned and disconcerted to learn of the death of Nick Waloff. He joined Emmanuel College, Cambridge, in 1970, the year in which I was elected as Fellow in Geography there. I was Nick's Director of Studies. He was a serious and able student, but he had a compelling sense of humour and was always willing to question in a disconcerting but entirely justifiable way the validity of statements made by professional geographers. He was a pleasure to teach and I was very pleased in recent years to meet up with him and his group of 1970-1973 Geographers for what became a regular feature of my annual social calendar, lunch with Nick and his fellow 1970s Emma Geographers. He will be sorely missed.
